Last month, I presented a session at the annual UX Scotland conference. It was a great honour to appear on the same programme as people with a world-wide reputation in the field such as Jared Spool and Dana Chisnell. In this post, I’ve included my slides and a transcript of what I said.

I had an opportunity to attend a masterclass held by Gerry McGovern, the pioneer of top tasks — a key user research tool used by our team for ten years.

On Wednesday 5 July we’ll add the latest updates to EdWeb. This release includes social media sharing functions; the ability to add mathematical functions to a page; and security updates and bug fixes.

Google has introduced a new ‘home’ within Google Analytics to try to introduce insights from machine learning into the platform. This replaces the former starting report – Audience, Overview – and in this post, I’d like to offer my thoughts on what this change means for University of Edinburgh users.

This week we ran our first event to showcase the work of the pilot User Experience Service and associated areas like EdGEL and strategy development. At this session I wanted to try a different approach, encouraging dialogue about our work-in-progress, rather than one-way dissemination.

When we edit and structure web content, words are important. But having an understanding of why we’re doing it underpins everything.

At a recent Website Support Clinic, I worked with a web publisher who was creating an EdWeb form with a question that had potentially multiple textfield answers. We used conditionals so that the form would only present extra textfields when needed.

Having recently joined the University in the role of Head of Web Strategy & Technologies, I’ve had an intense few weeks getting to grips with the University’s online presence. In this post I’ll cover a little of my thinking around strategy, and upcoming areas of work.

I’ve recently been learning about an approach to marketing and product management strategy called ‘Jobs to be done’. It seems an excellent way to bring business and user goals into alignment, and one to explore further in our thinking about product development.

We recently held a pair writing workshop with staff from Student Experience Services (SES), collaborating with them to create better, user-focused content.
