As AI-generated content becomes increasingly prevalent, questions of trust emerge, prompting a growing need for transparency about the creation of digital content. As part of an academic study, I designed and prototyped ways to display provenance data for synthetic content made by an AI searchbot on a University website.

In January, the UX team spent a day ideating on how to apply Drupal AI to University web content management and built a prototype including an AI-powered search feature. But would students find it useful and usable? Preliminary UX research revealed useful insights.

This summer, Digital Content Style Guide Intern Mostafa Ebid integrated ELM into EdWeb2 in a Generative AI tool aimed at helping web publishers prepare content. He tested it with a sample of participants to make an initial assessment of the user experience it provided in the context of assisting them with web publishing tasks.

In March this year, I was asked to join the Drupal leadership team, to bring my UX knowledge and expertise both to Drupal’s newest product, Drupal CMS, and to Drupal core. I reflect on six months of contributing to an open-source community in a leadership position.

During a day spent working with Drupal AI specialists, we explored different ways to apply AI to enhance search and retrieval of content from University websites.  

As part of a day of AI experimentation with Drupal specialists, we learned how to use automated technology to evaluate content against the University’s guidance on house writing style.  

Advancements in Drupal AI and LLMs prompted us to explore ways to use AI to enhance and improve UX. Working with Drupal AI specialists, we spent a day considering how AI can impact user experiences of those publishing, searching and consuming University web content.
