Food insecurity lasts longer than Christmas. We are continuing our efforts to support those in need.

As we all return to our normal everyday routines, it’s important to not forget that there are many people and families that are experiencing food insecurity all year long. To help as much as we can, LTW is launching their annual collection of donations of much needed food items.

According to the Trussell community, a leading UK-wide anti-poverty charity, 43 food banks across 26 local authorities in Scotland had distributed 262,400 emergency food parcels, 60% of them to families with children in the 12 months’ preceding April 2024. This is a number largely identical to the previous 12 months’ and, sadly, it is expected to remain as is for this year, too.

To help as much as we can, LTW is launching their annual collection of donations of much needed food items. In December 2023, we have managed to collect 45Kg and donate to the Edinburgh Food Project. This year, the collection will align with the celebrations for Burns’ Night.

  1. Edinburgh Food Project
  2. Salvation Army
  3. Edinburgh Community Food

What to donate

Items that are in urgent need of include UHT milk, rice, jam, cereal, long life fruit juice, tinned food (cold meat, fruit, vegetables, spaghetti, custard, rice pudding, tuna, soup), ready meals (e.g. pot noodles), pasta, pasta or curry sauce, porridge, weetabix, baked beans.

Items that are not accepted include: Bottles of water (due to weight), very large bags or boxes (too heavy or large to carry home), opened, used or out-of-date items, fresh or frozen food, and alcohol.

I hope you will join us and donate these much-needed food items, gathering more than 45Kg compared to our last effort, and helping those in need.
