On the 5th June, I had the privilege of presenting at the annual UCISA Sustainability Conference titled ‘Will New Technology Help or Harm the Planet?’. Here’s a run down of how it went.

As the UX Service begins our next digital sustainability initiative, it was timely to pull together insights from our recent work for ideas on ways to reduce the environmental impact of digital content.

Choosing a green hosting provider is a great way to improve your digital sustainability. But, as I’ve found out, this is only one part of the puzzle towards responsible digital ownership. Read more to understand the complexities behind a green hosting certification.

The 15th of March marks Digital Clean-up Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about digital pollution and an opportunity to audit all data, both personal and work-related. 

We’ve collaborated with Little Forest to identify key metrics for their Web Sustainability Feature. Find out about how I navigated the nuances of the data to make the tool more precise and actionable for web publishers.

In summer 2024, Chris O’Neill, Green Digital Design Intern, completed a digital sustainability audit of the UX Service website. He looked at carbon emissions and page weight but also examined usage of the site, with analytics data and user research. We acted on his findings to make the site greener and more user-centred.
