How we’ve improved the Pure widget

We have recently launched an update to the widget which pulls staff research activity data from the Pure system and enables it to be published dynamically on University web pages like staff profiles. This update brings in a selection of new features and a revamped interface.

The new Pure widget.

What’s new?

Our main focus for improvement was adding the ability to display researcher activities in Pure profiles. Website editors can now choose to display activities and/or publications inside a new tabbed interface. Other improvements include the ability to:

  • display up to 20 publications and/or activities
  • show or hide the researcher photograph
  • choose a colour theme to match your EdWeb site

The new widget makes better use of the available space to present your researchers’ content, and we now display the publication classification information, status and journal issue number (where available).

Going into the future

We are looking to enhance the widget backend to be more efficient at pulling information from the Pure API, and pull additional information such as research press coverage and projects. When this work is completed, we plan to further enhance the Pure widget with these new features.

Hi Calum, great to hear about the new functionality of the Pure widget; in my College (CAHSS) we’ve also had some good feedback regarding the inclusion of classification, status and journal issue number (though I wonder if you plan to extend the additional metadata to chapters too? At the moment the title of the host publication doesn’t seem to display). One suggestion I’d perhaps make is that before looking into pulling other record types from Pure (such as press clippings & projects – in particular the latter, as the list is rarely comprehensive!), it would be good to see about including the list of authors in publication metadata; currently the lack of authors for co-authored publications presents a major obstacle to turning on the Pure feed/using the widget in our Schools as without it the publication list seems to suggest academics are claiming single authorship of papers which often have multiple co-authors.

      Hi Ewa,
thanks for getting in contact about the work we have being doing around PURE web integration, and thanks for raising the issue of publication author listings. This has been raised in the past as well, as one of the most prominent requirements to include. We have taken steps to include in the next round of work for the PURE Widget, main challenge to address is presentation of big number of authors (some of the publications have more than 50), and finding the most practical and best representative way to do this. We would definitely include College feedback to guide us, as it is of imperative importance to deliver something that would be meaningful, useful and accurate for the academic community to adopt.
