This is a question we answer quite often, but for which there’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer. So I decided to pull together some of the factors that you should consider when thinking about creating a new ‘subsite’ in EdWeb.
On Thursday 7 November 2109, I was asked to speak at the Squiz Summit on how we promote the work we do with our search engine, and how we analyse the performance of search. I realised I hadn’t blogged it previously, so thought I’d summarise here.
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” said Benjamin Franklin – and he was a smart guy. In this post, I’ll outline the preparations we’ve undertaken in case the worst should happen and one of our priority services fails.
I’ve been thinking about the ways in which we align our digital products with wider strategic direction, and how we can measure whether the changes we make are working for our users and customers. In particular, I’ve been considering how we can make data-informed decisions about the University’s search service.
On August 13, we will apply a collection of development work and bug fixes to EdWeb. These include an image gallery, accordion element, easier ways to provide video on EdWeb pages, and a new Landing Page content type. These developments were funded by Communications and Marketing and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
On April 11, we will apply the latest developments to EdWeb: Google Tag Manager, updates to our GDPR mechanisms, and updates to the Profile Overview page. We’ll also be adding the latest set of bug fixes, Drupal core and module security updates.
I’ve recently been experimenting with custom reports in Google Analytics in order to identify “Page not found” errors that occur in the University of Edinburgh website.

Prompted by the launch of the University’s new Academic Blogging Service, I’ve recently been thinking about why we run our blog, and what advice we would give to others on departmental blog strategy.
