We’re creating an online version of our popular Writing for the Web course, and are looking for volunteers to help test it, and name it.

At a recent Website Support Clinic, I worked with a web publisher on a site that repeated the site title in navigation text and URLs. To help readers scanning information on your site, avoid repetition and place trigger words at the left.

A colleague recently asked me for some quick tips on creating effective instructional videos for a new piece of software they are creating. I’ve gathered my thoughts together, and hope they will be of wider use.

Pair writing is a speedy way to craft content — it teams up content and subject experts to write together in a 1-2 hour session. We’ve started using this process with colleagues to improve and create University web pages.

At a recent Website Support Clinic, I worked with a web publisher who wanted to make changes that affected areas of the site she didn’t manage. In these cases, while we’re happy to go through how to make changes at support clinics, we ask editors to work with their lead publishers.

We are nearing the end of 2016. This provides us with a great opportunity to review our actions, highlight our achievements, learn from our experiences and set our goals for more success in 2017. These are just a few (but definitely the most significant) areas we worked to develop and improve this year.

The University will shortly start a procurement exercise on the University central search engine. In preparation, I recently conducted search analytics research to attempt to better understand the way our users engage with search.

Join us for another open invite usability testing review workshop, which is showcasing our work with IS Helpline to enhance the online student experience. You’ll see how we’ve improved the website support experience based on our last round of testing, and learn how to run the process for yourself.

As of 21 November, the Website Programme offices will be located in our new home in Argyle House. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for our support and training services.
