A new vision and strategy for web

A set of activities to support the development of a long-term University-wide web strategy has kicked off recently, by recruiting the new role of Head of Web Strategy and Technologies.

Colan Mehaffey joined the Learning, Teaching and Web Services division having previous experience in similar roles with The Scottish Government and the National Trust for Scotland.

Revisiting the web scope and setting the strategy

Colan’s initial scope is to take stock of the University’s digital environment and organisational structures, understand how web services are governed and managed and create the necessary networks to assist with delivering the main outputs of his work. Following up on significant effort towards establishing a set of centralised services to assist the organisation’s most efficient use of the web, his main delivery priorities are:

  • A comprehensive audit of the University’s web estate. The aim is to get a better understanding of public-facing University websites, their delivery platforms of choice and how these align with the current standards and policies.
  • An updated web governance model to manage our current web estate, underwrite the delivery of the web strategy and enable Schools, Colleges and Support Departments to effectively use the web. The existing Web Governance Group’s remit around the University Website needs to be revisited and expanded to reflect the current estate.
  • A long-term web strategy, vision and roadmap for how we use web technologies to achieve the University’s strategic aims.

This recruitment comes in a time of great change for the University and Information Services Group, as the Service Excellence and Digital Transformation programmes have kicked off earlier in the year. Colan’s work will align with these programmes and, vitally, with the University’s Corporate Plan.

If you would like to know more about these activities, please contact Colan or me directly.
