Inclusive Language Guide

The University of Edinburgh Inclusive Language Guide has now been published. The guide focuses on editorial guidance that avoids bias and conveys respect.

The Inclusive Language Guide was developed in consultation with our communities, and will be continuously iterated and co-designed in warm partnership with our subject matter experts. Our thanks to all the individuals who shared their experiences, dedicated their time and expertise, and took utmost care and consideration to curate the guide.

Inclusive Language Guide

Co-design with our communities

It was important to us to co-design the guide from the ground up, so we reached out to communities in the University to ask them about their lived experience of harmful language. Workshops and content crits were designed so that participants would feel safe, and this process has informed our learning about the complexities of running truly inclusive events.

You can read more about how we designed the Inclusive Language Guide in our blog from last year.

Feedback

Thank you to everyone who helped with getting us to the start line by attending our workshops and providing us with so much feedback, last year.

We hope that all the University communities and relevant colleagues will continue to offer their support, as the guide will need constant reviewing to ensure that the way we communicate fosters inclusion and is accessible to all.

Please get in touch by emailing website.support@ed.ac.uk if you have any comments or feedback about the guide. This will help us to continue our work of improving the guide in partnership with our communities.
