Website Support Clinic update – Staff Profiles
At a recent Website Support Clinic, I worked with a web editor who wanted to know the best option for adding staff bios. The timing could not have been more ideal as we’ve recently launched the profile page content type, which can help with this issue.
Profile layout
By default, the profile page is divided into seven sections:
- Individual/organisation information and contact details
- Biography
- Research
- Projects
- Publications
- Teaching & PhD supervision
- Media
While many of these fields are geared toward academic staff and PhD students, any staff member can create a profile. Any fields not filled in will not appear on the profile page, and moreover, extra categories can be created if necessary. For instance, your profile page can just show contact details and a biography.
Every staff member and PhD student is able to log onto EdWeb to create and edit their own profile, but lead publishers and any fellow editors they elect can also be given editing rights over profiles for people in their department.

Profile overview
After creating profiles, there’s the question of how to best link to them. In the case of the user I was working with, she was happy to link to profiles via the staff table she had already created which listed names and roles.
However, EdWeb can generate a list for you. In addition to the profile content type, there is also a profile overview type, which self-generates people lists based on the UUNs you select to add in.
No matter what order you add in the UUNs, they will format in alphabetical order, and if you add a UUN for a profile page that’s not been published or created yet, it simply won’t show in the list.
The overview shows in the format of Name, Role, Email and Phone number, and you can create separate lists on the same page for different groups (e.g. Academic and Support staff).
