User focused meetup – Lean methodologies

The next lunchtime meetup is on Thursday 28 March. Our focus in this session is Lean. Colleagues from Student Systems join us to share what they took away from a recent Lean in Higher Education conference, and Neil Allison will talk about the Lean UX methodology.

As usual, our lunchtime meetup takes the form of:

  • Presentation – in this session we have two talks, from Student Systems and Neil Alison, on Lean strategy.
  • Discussion – with the agenda decided and prioritised by the group

You can bring your lunch and eat while you watch.

About the talks

Late last year Chris Giles, Richard Arkless and Lillie McEnteer traveled to Tromsø,  for the Lean in Higher Education conference, hosted by The Arctic University of Norway.  Lean is a way of thinking that focuses on improving how we work. It brings people together to focus on what’s really important, creating value for customers. In this presentation, they’ll share what they learned and reflect on what this means for their work as business analysts in Student Systems and Administration.

Lean UX is a methodology inspired by the Lean movement, and expressed initially in a book by Jeff Gothelf and Josh Seiden. Neil Allison attended a workshop run by Jeff, and inspired by this has been putting the principles into practice wherever possible in projects he’s worked on. In this talk he’ll cover the key concepts, in particular the fundamental mindset approach of “All requirements are hypotheses”.

Our regular discussion group

We’ll follow up the talks with about 45 minutes of discussion following a group-organised agenda. We use the Lean Coffee approach to decide what to talk about and for how long.
