Every art material medium has its own specific texture and language. Isn’t it an unknown and exciting adventure to choose one or more materials to explore, try, and create? I have been painting watercolors for too long. It’s time to look at other materials of the “water-based family”. Maybe you will find that creating is more interesting.

Generalization: Through watercolor, water-soluble mixed media ink on paper, acrylic on paper, and mixed media painting on paper, this Open Toolkit helps people break through the scope of traditional painting types with a single painting material, blur the boundaries of each material, and expand the types of materials used. scope, thereby enriching people’s visual and emotional experience, developing a new aesthetic field of painting, and form a new form of language expression.

Aim: Understand the basic techniques of watercolour and practice watercolour painting with appropriate mixed media.

Tools needed: Watercolor paper, watercolor brush, salt, laundry detergent, tissue

Step:

  1. Introduce and demonstration(2.5min)

(1) Characteristics of watercolor painting: Transparency, quickness, and dispersion of fluids. You can take advantage of the water color to paint misty scenes.

(2) How to make watercolor paintings:

①Dry painting method: Dry painting method refers to the method of painting the raw layer of paint once and then waiting for it to completely dry before applying the second layer of color.

② Wet painting method: The wet painting method refers to applying the second color immediately before the first color is dry, or first moistening the paper surface with water and then coloring.

  1. Introduce demonstrate the comprehensive material practice of watercolor:   (4min)                    Mixed media refers to materials used in painting in addition to traditional painting materials. Watercolor itself has paper, fine brushes, brushes, sponges, etc., as well as charcoal, pencils, pens, oil paints, etc. For example, add glue to water, the medium for watercolor painting.Subtle changes will occur when adding pigments; add glycerin or egg white, turpentine, alum water, white wine, Asphalt, tea water, salt water, liquid wax, detergent, soapy water and other liquids will produce different texture effects.

     As a result, subtle changes will occur when blending the paint; the picture will form a rich texture. These materials can play different roles in the painting, which can enrich the picture, enhance the appeal, increase the sense of layering, improve the contrast and so on.

4. Practice: (8min)

Each person will be assigned a piece of watercolor paper, a watercolor brush, edible salt, dish soap, and napkins. They can paint according to their own imagination according to the demonstration just now, and use these materials flexibly.

I believe that through this class, students have learned the importance of watercolor comprehensive practice materials to the expressiveness of works. This is a work of mine. In this work, I used salt and acrylic to paint, so its main function is Open up people’s sensory vision and enrich the expressive power of pictures.
