Non-Verbal Communication: Quick Understanding and Application

Introduce

Do you know how much of communication is nonverbal? According to the survey, there are 90% of communication is nonverbal.

Objective

This course is aimed to enable you to understand and apply the basics of non-verbal communication within 20 minutes.

After completing the study, the scholar can independently analyze the nonverbal communication of others, and use this technique to make others understand what you mean without verbal communication.

Step 1: Types of Non-Verbal Communication (5 min)

Let’s look at the classification of nonverbal communication, and the following video will enable you know better.

  • Body Language: Posture, gestures, and proximity.
  • Facial Expressions: Emotions conveyed by the face, including micro-expressions.
  • Tone and Voice: How intonation and volume impact communication.
  • Eye Contact: Conveys confidence, interest, and sometimes honesty.
  • Physical Appearance and Attire: Impressions created through appearance.
  • Spatial behavior:Keep physical space distance.

Step 2: Analyze (4 min)

Now we know that people can convey different emotions through non-verbal means, and we can also understand their true intentions by observing their body language.

  • What nonverbal communication does the character in the video use?
  • What emotions can be seen from their body language or expressions?

Step 3: Sharing session (5 min)

This session involves one learner describing an event (in 2 minutes) and another person writing down the details of your observations. After that, switch your roles.

The event could be something you’re up to date with, something recent or talking about something you like or hate.

You can say whatever you want, it is up to you!

Step 4: Reflection & discussion (5 min)

Discuss the following issues:

  1. Have you learned something new about your understanding of non-verbal communication, and were there nonverbal cues that you previously overlooked?
  2. What parts of analyzing other people’s non-verbal behavior are difficult for you?
  3. In your opinion, how can you effectively practice and improve your non-verbal communication skills in daily life?
