The Importance of Backups

LTW inherited a number of websites from LTS when it was formed several years ago, including a number of standalone WordPress sites.  Most of these WordPress sites are kept up-to-date by the customer themselves, which means customers run theme and plugin updates through the WordPress administration screens when required.

Recently, one of our customers updated a plugin that had been adapted by an LTS developer – adapting a third-party WordPress plugin probably isn’t best practice, but that’s another discussion – and that caused parts of the site to break. All the changes that had been made by the LTS developer had been overwritten by the update.

Luckily, we had a backup of the plugin and simply rolled back to the previous version. Problem solved for now. We will have to look at adapting the LTS code to work with the new version of the plugin, but, for the moment, we have a working site.

It obvious that backups are important, but it’s not until things go wrong that you really appreciate the fact that you didn’t make the mistake of having your code in just one place.
