Moodle LTI module with template courses.

We have  been asked to create a way to connect existing courses in Learn to Moodle. The tricky bit was to allow automatic course creation in Moodle as there are hundreds of those to create every year. Creating courses has been done in Learn and it was troublesome to repeat that work in Moodle.

The existing  Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) module comes as a starting point. It allows us to make the connection but doesn’t automatically create a course.

The modified module is called LTI Course Template. It works by checking if the course has already been created in Moodle by comparing its unique id generated by Learn. If not, it copies a template course to be used as this new course. The module can also be used by any other Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), not just Learn.

The LTI connection link is put in VLE and it doesn’t matter if student or teacher first click on the link. Once the check is done the user gets added to the course with the student or teacher privileges.

The additional change from the standard LTI module is that you can have many template courses set up in Moodle to suit your needs. Each template course will have its own LTI connection link that can be put on any LTI supporting VLE.

It is a little tool that helps to save a lot of manual labour.
