Teaching Matters is the University of Edinburgh’s website for debate about learning and teaching, for sharing ideas and approaches to teaching, and for showcasing our successes, including academic colleagues who are leading the way in delivering brilliant teaching. Every month Teaching Matters takes a theme and explores it through a number of blog contributions over the month. We also run an events listing page.
The focus for June is assessment and feedback. We are reprising a theme we ran this time last year, offering further focus on the topic. You can browse all of our published blog posts on the topic of assessment and feedback including:
- Effective feedback at scale by Celine Caquineau
- Learning the Language of Assessment: assessment literacy and assessment guidance for students by Philip Cook and Claire Duncanson
- Grade Point Averages: What’s all the fuss about? by Antony Maciocia
- Grade Point Averages: what the fuss should be about… by Neil Lent
Throughout June, we’ll be adding to this content with several posts including the following:
- Closing the gap: A study of student and staff responses to coursework feedback by Alexa Morcom
- How do students view assessment by Gale Macleod
- Enhancing Feedback and Feedforward in the Sport subject area by Dave Saunders and Simon Coleman
We hope that you enjoy this edition of Teaching Matters and encourage you to get involved. Future Teaching Matters themes include:
Student-led learning and teaching – July/August 2017
Teaching at scale (large groups; lectures; strategies) – September 2017
Mental health / Student-led learning and teaching – October 2017
Research-led teaching and learning – November 2017

If you’d like to contribute a blog post, video, or other media on any upcoming themes or any teaching-related subject, let us know. Remember, you can also submit details about your event and we can advertise it on Teaching Matters.
