The University of Edinburgh is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment both online and off. As our hybrid model of learning and teaching involves more engagement with digital tools and forums, some students may require extra guidance when it comes to appropriate online behaviour.

Creating safe digital spaces for the University community requires both timely staff moderation and student cooperation. It is crucial that students understand what is expected of them within digital spaces, including what might constitute misconduct. It is also important that everyone does their part in fostering and maintaining safe and inclusive virtual environments.

This toolkit aims to support staff in providing effective interventions when witnessing poor online behaviours that fail to adhere to the University’s Dignity and Respect Policy and/or Code of Student Conduct. It also serves as a complement to the University’s Virtual Classroom Policy and Digital Citizenship Guide.
