Kaela Albert completed a summer internship as she wanted to use the many physics and mathematical skills in a real-world environment.
I undertook my internship at Earthwave – a data science company specialising in understanding and predicting climate change and its impact on the cryosphere. Using satellite data, I analysed ice elevation levels across various regions. I filtered and produced this data in an easily digestible format for researchers.
This internship allowed me to gain insight into office dynamics and the day-to-day responsibilities of a data analyst. I worked with a small team who were approachable and helpful. I developed my professional communication skills, became more proficient in analysis techniques and improved my coding abilities. I also had the opportunity to contribute to meetings and present my findings weekly.
As a result of this internship, I had experience in geosciences, an area I was keen to explore. Internships are a fantastic opportunity to decide if the field is a good fit for you in the long term. They are also an excellent opportunity to learn, ask for help and create connections. You will need to learn new things, but your supervisor or team leader will always be happy to provide guidance. If you’re considering applying for an internship, know that the experience will undoubtedly benefit you!
