Make Your Music Memory Card

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Summary

The focus of this open toolkit lies in exploring the connection between music and memory and helping learners present their emotional and memory responses to music in a visual form. Through reflective listening and visual creation, learners can transform their personal experiences into a creative form of expression.

Materials needed: A computer or phone, headphones, pen, blank paper.

Steps:

Part 1 Preparation (5 minutes): Watch a five-minute video to understand the relationship between music and memory, and at the same time think about whether you have similar experiences in your own life.

Part 2 Choose Music (2 mins): On your phone or computer, choose one piece of music or melody that is meaningful to you.

Part 3 Listen and Record (7mins): Play the music and pay attention to the memories and emotions it brings you. On a blank sheet of paper, write some keywords or simple drawings, and express your feelings and memories in any way you like. Please also write the name of the song and the artist on your card, creating a memory card that belongs to you and this song.

Part 4 Review and Inspiration (6 minutes): Think about what memories and emotions the music has awakened, and consider the following example: Can this experience become inspiration for your own creation?

*Example: Janet Cardiff’s sound installation The Missing Voice: Case Study B
This is an audio work that uses some ambient sounds to guide the audience as if they are walking through their memories.
