New city, new country, new chapter of my life – everything felt scary. But what led me forward was my dream of studying physics and expanding my horizons at one of the world’s top universities. So here I am.
Hi, I am Roberta, a second-year physics student, and as you might guess, I am not from Edinburgh – or even Scotland. But in just one year, I have grown to love it here. Being away from home for the first time in life was hard. I felt very homesick (and still sometimes do), but step by step, I found my place. Here’s how:
Remember your passion
Think about why you decided to come here. For me, I always (I know, cliché) dreamed of working as a scientist exploring space, stars, and life beyond Earth. The University of Edinburgh physics programme felt like the right place for me, with its world-class researchers and Nobel Prize connections. In my first year, I chose optional courses that aligned with my interests – Astrobiology and Introductory Astrophysics – and they were some of my favorites. I also joined the Physics and Astronomy Society, went stargazing, and even saw first-edition works by such famous physicists as Newton and Copernicus with my own eyes! Oh, and I should not forget pizza lunches organized by the School of Physics and Astronomy. They were truly the highlight of my week.

Keep your hobbies alive
Contemporary dance has been part of my life for 10 years, and I didn’t want to lose that. Fortunately, there were so many opportunities here in Edinburgh. Modern Dance Society was a place where I could dance my favorite style, participate in showcases, and even try new styles like jazz, which I now love so much. I also joined a dance studio for more advanced contemporary classes and tried yoga for the first time with Yoga Society. Therefore, my desire to continue pursuing my biggest hobby introduced me to so many new, incredible experiences.
Bring a piece of home with you
Homesickness is real, and connecting with fellow Lithuanians in Edinburgh made a big difference for me. I know, it might not be the case for everyone, some societies don’t exist, or it might feel strange speaking your own language when you get so used to English. However, finding a familiar community – or even cooking a familiar dish or FaceTiming loved ones – helps you feel grounded.

Explore and say yes
Play a tourist at least once a week and try to find your favorite spots in this city that feel close to you – whether that’s a quiet library corner, a view of a castle, or a park path that you take to clear your mind. Join societies, attend events, or try any opportunity, even if it sounds intimidating at first. Trying new things can open doors you never expected.

I know that change is scary, but Edinburgh, the University, and the School of Physics and Astronomy offer so many opportunities – you just need to take them. As I continue my physics journey, I am excited for what’s ahead, and I am determined to keep saying yes to new experiences while enjoying my studies and everything beyond.
