Immerse Yourself in the Heart of Scotland’s Capital
Imagine spending a week in the vibrant, historic city of Edinburgh, experiencing university life just as a first-year student would. The Sutton Trust Summer School offers this unique opportunity to young student all across the UK. From 15-20 July, participants will live, study, and socialise in the heart of Scotland’s bustling capital, all while gaining invaluable insights into higher education.
An Enthralling Academic Experience
During the summer school, students will delve into two academic subjects of their choice, ultimately specialising in one. STEM courses offered this year include Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Computer Science. Non-STEM disciplines include English Literature & Languages, Literatures & Cultures, History, Sociology, Philosophy, Law, Medicine, and Politics & International Relations.
Guided by the University of Edinburgh’s expert academic staff, they will engage in lectures, tutorials, laboratory experiments, and group work, mirroring the experience of a real first-year student. This academic journey is designed to be both challenging and inspiring, providing a glimpse into the rigour and excitement of university-level studies.
Live the Student Life
Living in student halls, students will get a taste of the independence and camaraderie that define university life. Sorted into Clans, they will make friends from all over the UK, forming bonds that could last a lifetime. Students will have the opportunity to explore Edinburgh’s rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful landscapes through varied social activities that ensure there’s never a dull moment.
Preparing for the Future
The Sutton Trust Summer School is more than just an academic experience. It’s a comprehensive introduction to university life. Current students and summer school staff will provide guidance on key aspects of the university journey, including:
- The UCAS application process and personal statements
- Student finance
- Accommodation options
- Student life and admissions
- The unique experience of studying in Scotland
By the end of the week, students will have a clearer understanding of what to expect from university and how to navigate the path ahead.
Application Information
Applications for the 2024 Summer School are now closed, but it’s never too early to start planning for 2025. If you’re currently in S5 (Scotland), Year 12 (England and Wales), or Year 13 (Northern Ireland), and have always attended a state-funded school or college, you’re eligible to apply.
Selection Criteria:
- Achieve at least five GCSEs at grades 9 – 6 (A*- B) (including a minimum of two grades 9 – 7), or five A or B grades at National 5 (including one A), with qualifications in subjects relevant to your chosen stream.
- Be the first in your family to attend university.
- Have received Free School Meals or EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) during secondary school.
- Attend a school or college with below-average A-level or Higher point scores, or low progression rates to higher education.
- Reside in a neighbourhood with low higher education progression rates or high socio-economic deprivation.
Meeting these criteria enhances your chances of securing a place, but not meeting all of them does not disqualify you.
