Sophia Schubert applied for a career development summer project because it gave her the chance to work on an exciting project, develop new skills and gain valuable work experience.
I was working on a web page that visualised baryon acoustic oscillations, with the aim to make the topic more accessible and easier to understand for the general public.
The project was supervised by Dr Samuel Brieden and supported by the cosmology research group at the Institute for Astronomy. The summer project allowed me to develop many skills, both technical and non-technical. I learned a lot about cosmology, programming, web development and science outreach, but I also developed my planning and communication skills and gained confidence with presenting my work. Additionally, I got a valuable insight into work at a research institute.
Overall, the summer project was a great experience, and I would highly recommend it to other students. If you are doing a summer project, my advice would be to say yes to as many things as possible. For example, I was able to attend many talks, which allowed me to learn a lot about astronomy and get the most out of my summer project.
