Here we go!
Step 1: Look at the painting (3min)
Look closely at the painting for 2 minutes, then look away and try to recall the details of the picture and think about what elements impressed you.
Step 2: Talk about the painting (2min)
Describe the painting in five words, including color and plot, or how you feel about the painting as a whole. Write these words down.
Step 3: Feel the painting (2min)
Look for strong visual impact, such as what makes you feel silky soft or sharp iron rough in the image. If you could get your hands on something in this painting, what would it feel like, what temperature, what weight.
Step 4: Imagine or imitate the painting (3min)
-
If you choose the landscape painting:
Imagine that you can walk into this landscape, choose where you want to stand, and observe which elements are closest or farthest from you. If you take a deep breath, you can smell it.
-
If you choose the portrait:
Try to choose a character to mimic their gestures and expressions. Notice where their feet are placed, what their hands are doing, and their facial expressions. If you could talk to them, what questions would you ask them?
Step 5: Compare the painting (2min)
Take a step back and look at the other paintings next to you. How are they different from this painting? If you had to pick one to take with you, which one would it be?
Step 6: Criticize the painting (3min)
Think of some grand, divergent, critical problems. Is this a very ugly painting? If all the art was removed from the walls, would this still be an art gallery? Can only good works of art be exhibited?
