Ubuntu Jammy Progress 6

This week has seen some good progress on providing full support for Ubuntu Jammy in our weekly releases. Here are the details…

Package Repository

We now have a shiny new package server running Ubuntu Focal. The increased disk space means that we can now also carry mirrors for Jammy. Not all the repositories available for Focal also support Jammy, in particular, these are missing: ghc (Glasgow Haskell Compiler), lammps, mono (open source .NET framework), ROS version 1 (Robot Operating System).

Stable Releases

To be able to provide a weekly stable release for a platform we have to be able to retain all versions of packages. This can be a problem since upstream providers regularly remove old packages which we might still be relying upon. Now we have mirrors for Jammy we are able to begin creating weekly stable releases. At this point we will not be doing any official testing of the release for the Jammy platform but this should still make it easier for other sites to begin work on their own systems.

PXE Installer

This week we will begin creating a new installer ISO every week and providing it on the LCFG website. As with Focal the process of deploying the ISOs can be managed on your PXE service using the LCFG isotools, the default configuration for those tools has been updated to include the new ubu2204 platform.

The standard PXE boot options also now include the Jammy platform so that clients can be easily installed.

Desktop Configuration

The package lists for a graphical desktop configuration are still not in great shape. We expect to deal with those very soon.
