Weekly Changes – 03/07/2023
The release for this week is a collection of smaller changes, mainly targetted at the Ubuntu server environment. Here are all the details…
Ubuntu Jammy
The dbus-x11 package has been moved from the LCFG_DESKTOP_MATE
option to the LCFG_DESKTOP_MINIMAL
option so that it matches with Focal. This makes it easier to remove the dbus-user-session package which causes problems for some network filesystems (e.g. AFS on DICE).
Kernel
The INF_TEST
kernel for Ubuntu Focal and Jammy has been updated to 5.15.0-75.82
Auditd
It was noted that on Ubuntu all events reported by the Linux audit daemon are logged to syslog by default, that occurs irrespective of the configuration for auditd or audispd. Investigations revealed that this (badly documented) behaviour is caused by a Systemd journald service – systemd-journald-audit.socket
– which is enabled by default. The service can be disabled by masking, on DICE we log to /var/log/audit/audit.log
and consequently don’t need it to also go to syslog, so we now have:
LCFG_SYSTEMD_UNIT_MASK(auditdlogs,systemd-journald-audit.socket)
With this in place the logging to syslog will stop at the next reboot. In case it’s ever needed, the previous behaviour can be re-enabled by defining the DICE_OPTIONS_AUDITD_SYSLOG
macro.
PostgreSQL
Support has been dropped from DICE for the ancient PostgreSQL versions 9.6 and 10.
DICE syslog
As part of the transition to an Ubuntu server, all syslog messages on DICE will now be sent to both the current loghost (copernicus) and the new loghost (arcturus).
Dell System Update
The Dell System Update (dsu) package is now available for Ubuntu Jammy.
iptables
The LCFG iptables component has been updated to improve the Systemd service configuration on Ubuntu. The component relies on using the ip
utility, in particular it uses it to detect if IPv6 is enabled. That approach can only succeed if the networking is already active so the service now waits for the network-online.target
to be reached.
DHCP Server
The LCFG dhcpd component has been updated to add support for Ubuntu Jammy.
Software
There is a new LCFG_OPTIONS_GCC10
package option for Ubuntu Focal which can be used to install a newer version of gcc and g++.
