Weekly Changes – 10/07/2023

The release for this week contains several welcome minor fixes that should silence a few irritating warnings on servers. Here are all the details…

Schema Changes

As part of the work to change how we manage schemas, the schemas for the gconf and viewvc components have been moved from the dice to lcfg directory so they are accessible by other sites. A few other defaults packages have been updated to match the versions in the DICE live package list.

Kernel

The INF and INF_TEST kernel series for Ubuntu Focal and Jammy have both been updated to version 5.15.0-76.83.

Ubuntu Jammy

To improve the handling of Out of Memory OOM situations the systemd-oomd package is now installed on all Jammy systems.

Rust

Support for the Rust language has been updated to version 1.66 in Ubuntu Focal and Jammy.

avahi

As the avahi-daemon package is not installed by default on all Ubuntu systems, the avahi-daemon.socket is no longer enabled as standard which silences some Systemd warnings. It is enabled for all desktop systems, for others the service can be enabled by including the lcfg/options/avahi-daemon.h header.

NFS

The rpc-svcgssd.service is now masked out on DICE machines since it’s not required and fails to start at boot time which means Systemd thinks the machine hasn’t booted cleanly. See the Debian bug#869640 for some discussion of the issue.

Installer

The DICE installer for Ubuntu Jammy no longer fetches packages via the generic web cache – wwwcache.inf – this was only necessary before we had a local mirror of the Ubuntu package repositories.

The signing key for the Geosciences package repository has been updated.

PostgreSQL

Support for PostgreSQL 10 has been restored to DICE as it turns out we still need it for our RT services.

conserver

Work is ongoing to add support for the conserver serial console management software on Ubuntu. The LCFG component schema has been updated to handle the different configuration file locations and also that it does not run as root on Debian/Ubuntu systems. The component has been rewritten so that the conserver service is directly managed by Systemd, the templates have also been rewritten using the Perl Template Toolkit so that they are much easier to maintain.
