Weekly Changes – 11/01/2021

A much smaller set of changes for this week, here’s the summary…

Policy Kit Fixed

In Informatics we use polkit to delegate to DICE users the ability to shutdown and reboot machines which are allocated to them. The policy kit (polkit) configuration on Ubuntu is now being applied correctly, it appears that the location of the configuration file is different between SL7 and Ubuntu.

Systemd and unmanaged unit files

Typically with LCFG components we expect to manage the entire configuration but with systemd this is not always possible or desirable, in particular some unit files may be automatically created depending on the configuration of the machine (e.g. what disks it contains). The LCFG systemd component schema has been modified to add an ignoredunits resource, that takes a list of files to be ignored, simple globbing is supported. Note that the new version of the component code (0.10.2) will appear in the next stable release.

Test kernel

The INF_TEST kernel for Ubuntu Focal has been updated to 5.4.0-59.65.

i386 packages

We are beginning to add i386 packages to the Ubuntu Focal platform to provide support for some legacy applications. This requires an extra packages list for i386 updates – lcfg/lcfg_ubu2004_i386_updates.pkgs – this is now being updated weekly but is not yet included by default.

Lego Mindstorms EV3

Support has been added for connecting the EV3 block to a DICE student lab machine using USB. This allows users to then access the device over ssh.

New Software

No new software was added this week but it’s worth noting that the libllvm11 package was installed as a new dependency for a wide variety of software.
