Weekly Changes – 07/12/2020

A fairly quiet week with few changes which will affect users. Remember that this is the final LCFG release for 2020. Here’s a summary…

Libreoffice icon issues

The “breeze” style package has been removed, it doesn’t work very well with many users seeing icon issues. Due to alphabetical sorting of all installed styles the “breeze” style was always selected as the default. The default will now be “Colibre” which appears to work a lot better.

grub configuration

There is ongoing work to add support to Ubuntu for configuring the grub bootloader. This is almost ready for deployment but to minimise the risk of causing problems over the Christmas break it won’t be enabled until January. This week the default file paths have all been verified and the component file templates have been updated to support Ubuntu. This also required a small tweak to the way the Ubuntu ‘preseed’ installer support checks for UEFI/legacy boot support.

Desktop power button configuration

A short press of the power button on Ubuntu desktops is now configured to trigger a reboot rather than a shutdown.

New Software

Along with the weekly security updates, the following packages were newly installed on DICE Ubuntu. Note that not all machines will carry all these packages:

  • caja-open-terminal – adds an ‘Open in Terminal’ entry to the right-button mouse menu in the default MATE desktop environment.
