Surveys

We began our session on Miro discussing how to conduct and interview or survey. I think I will do a survey/questionnaire as I want to reach as many people as possible, using their experiences to create my design.

We then moved on to creating the survey, starting with the aims of the survey we then moved on to writing the questions and answer options. I realised I need to define more of the terms I use and then go on to ask specific questions about their experiences rather than vague questions as I want to be able to use this to curate part of the design brief.

I might include a section in which the participants rate a series of photographs of interior spaces to gauge how they react and what spaces they would feel most calm in. This could be more helpful for participants as it can be hard to know what elements make a space work for them.

After our review submissions we commented on each others uploads. This was very helpful as we got feedback from both tutors and peers as well as getting inspiration. I have copied my responses blow for reference:

The aim of your project is clear and concise; you know who your client is which is also reflected through the questions in your survey. Maybe with the precedent studies you could make small notes of what you like or dont like about the spaces? This may help inspire your design concept and also outline what is missing in these current environments.

– Good start researching the cite, I like that you’ve included infomation about what the building is made from
– Maybe worth inclding a map which is more focused on your building – its really hard to make out and see whats directly around it.
– The plans and sections are really good and clear but each drawings can have its own page so that its easier to navigate and read, also its unclear what part of the building you’re doing as I’m sure you’re not doing the whole 15 or so floors, maybe investigate with a drawing the particular area you are using
– The first predent study is missing some images of the actual interior I think this could be really useful for your research
– I think maybe a slide stating what your project brief is currently and how its evolved from Review 1 could be really useful to know why these precedents relate to your project
– Would love some comments saying why you like or what you find unsuccsessful about the precedent studies
– I think the questionaire questions are really well considered and will massively help your project develop
– The progression notes are super clear and assured, maybe include this earlier in the presention

Overall I think your ideas are really interesting and I think using the Uni building is interesting and ticks the box of targetting people your age. The presention is very clear but could do with a slightly different order, always begin with your project and what stsge you’re at now, I think it helps frame the rest of the presentation. The precedents are really lovely and varied which is good to see you’re considering lots of different approaches and styles to develop your project.

Good research into your site. Make sure you note the rationale for your site. Why have you chosen it specifically? Your theme is an interesting one and will be further informed by your questionnaire. However, take time to think about:

  1. Who the questionnaire is for? Those with diagnosed ND or any person in the area that wants to use a kitchen space?
  2. Demographic – just students, or staff or local families too?
  3. Will this be part of the University EUSA services for example – this might work?

Think through the order of your questions. You may need to develop branced questions e.g. questions that are only relevant if you have answered ‘yes’ for example.

‘Conditional branching (or Skip logic) is a feature that changes what question or a respondent sees next based on how they answer the current question. Conditional branching creates a custom path through the survey that varies based on a respondent’s answers’. Other precedent studies could also include looking in to ‘communal or community kitchens’ and, if for students, new student facility buildings such as Aalborg University – Copenhagen, RCA new development in the Power Station and Central St Martins/ Coaldrops Yard development. A couple of other precedents to look at:

You might like to look into other buildings of the same era and see how the interiors have been developed (finishes and forms).

I really liked your research into your site it was very clear and went into some really interesting detail about the buildings significance, its influences and whats its made from. A thorough presentation.

  • You can tell from you questionnaire and you questions that you have already dedicated a lot of the thought to the types of spaces you will need and considered your user as an individual
  • For the precedent studies they were really interesting it would be nice to see how they have informed and influenced your design thinking and how you might approach your own project
  • Maybe for the justification of your site you could write a bit about why you chose that building and if there is anything significant or of use in the surround area
  • in your presentation I thought the way that you highlighted the key basic information in a grey box made it quite succinct graphically
