Weekly Changes – 12/05/2025

Please note the imminent demise of Ubuntu Focal. Other than that there’s little change this week, here are the details of the few notable changes…

Ubuntu Focal

All sites using Ubuntu Focal (20.04) should note that standard support will end in May 2025 (this month!). We will continue to support LCFG on that platform for a while but obviously the standard security updates will cease. We recommend upgrading to Ubuntu Noble (24.04).

We are currently investigating the use of Ubuntu Pro to provide extended support for Ubuntu Focal systems. There is a new header – lcfg/options/ubuntu-pro.h – which is being worked on. It is important to note that Ubuntu extended support is only free for personal use, a paid-for license is needed in all other cases.

fail2ban

A new version of the LCFG fail2ban component (0.5.0) is available for testing. This new version adds support for more backends (pyinotify and systemd) and allows multiple log files to be specified. The jail templates have been completely updated to match newer upstream configuration and improve the interaction with generated config. It can be tested by defining the LCFG_FAIL2BAN_TEST_NEW_VERSION macro at the top of an LCFG profile, any feedback would be appreciated.

GCC

The package options for newer versions of GCC (12, 13, 14) now include the associated cpp package so that useful versioned symlinks (e.g. cpp-13) are provided to the locations of the actual binaries.

Clickhouse

We have begun adding support for the ClickHouse open-source database. Headers are provided for both client and server, these are currently a work-in-progress.
