Weekly Changes – 07/02/2022

Not many changes this week, the most significant is a stable kernel update which is important for sites using OpenAFS. Here are the full details…

Kernel

The SL7 INF kernel has been updated to 3.10.0-1160.53.1.el7. This resolves an issue which affects the OpenAFS cache manager on SL7.

policykit on DICE

For the DICE Ubuntu platform the policykit-1 package has been removed by default. To satisfy dependencies, it is still included for all systems which use the graphical environment package lists. We rarely need Policykit on our servers so it seems sensible to improve security by not having it installed as standard.

rsync

The Systemd service file for the LCFG rsync component has been tweaked on Ubuntu so that it does not start until the network is fully ready.

Ubuntu PXE Service

The LCFG pxeserver has seen extensive work to add support for Ubuntu and also for managing grub2 configurations. The grub2 support is needed to provide complete support for PXE booting Ubuntu on UEFI based systems. So far we have relied on a single static grub2 configuration file for all machines, when completed this will allow the generation of bespoke configuration files for each system in a similar way to the existing support for syslinux.

DIY DICE

The DIY DICE service has been removed, it’s not been used by anyone outside of the Computing Team for a long time so it is unlikely anyone will notice.
