Weekly Changes – 22/11/2021

The main changes for this week are kernel and openafs updates for both platforms. Here are the full details…

Kernel

There are new INF stable kernel versions. Ubuntu Focal is updated to 5.4.0-89.100 and SL7 is updated to 3.10.0-1160.45.1.el7.

OpenAFS

We have been testing the latest stable version of openafs – 1.8.8 – for some time. The kernel updates for this week provide a good opportunity to also update the openafs packages. Full details of the changes are in the release notes.

PostgreSQL

Security updates have been released for PostgreSQL 14.1, 13.5, 12.9, 11.14, 10.19, and 9.6.24. Full details are in the release notes. Note that this is the final release of 9.6 before the official end of support.

DHCP clients

Some tidying of the Systemd configuration has been done for systems which use the lcfg/options/dhcp.h header. This will ensure that the dns and resolvconf components are not started at boot time.

Desktop configuration

References to the gpu-manager.service file have been removed from the standard Ubuntu desktop Systemd configuration. That file is part of the ubuntu-drivers-common package which is not included by default.

NSU

Support has been added to the lcfg/defaults.h header for disabling the nsu utility and component on SL7. This can now be disabled by defining the _NO_DEFAULT_NSU macro in your local site defaults header. Note that nsu is not available for Ubuntu.

This macro is now defined for all DICE machines but nsu is still currently included via the dice/options/nsu.h header. The plan is that nsu will soon become an opt-in feature to be used on DICE machines only when essential.

Dell PowerEdge R6515

A hardware header has been added for the Dell PowerEdge R6515 server model. Please note that this is mostly a clone of the header for the R6525 and has not been tested by Informatics. Apparently, it works on Ubuntu, any further feedback on that platform or for SL7 would be appreciated.
