Starting university can be a scary time for everyone, but even more so for people who are part of underrepresented groups. Listed in this blog are some resources and safe spaces available for the LGBTQ+ community.

Edinburgh Hoppers

Edinburgh Hoppers is the official society for women, non-binary and transgender people in the School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh. They aim to provide an inclusive community where people are comfortable and can build both technical and networking skills to thrive in the tech environment through workshops and other events.

LGBTQ+ Support in the Students’ Association

The Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA) provides various support for the LGBTQ+ community. Listed below are some of their resources.

PrideSoc

PrideSoc is the LGBTQ+ Society of the University. They are a safe community where you can meet and connect with other LGBTQ+ people at their various social, charity, educational and political events.

LGBTQ+ Campaign

The LGBTQ+ Campaign is a safe space within EUSA where self-identifying LGBTQ+ students can come together, discuss the issues affecting them, and campaign to improve their student experience.

Trans & Non-Binary Campaign

Similarly to the LGBTQ+ Campaign, the Trans & Non-Binary Campaign exists to provide a safe space within EUSA for self-identifying trans & non-binary students.

Queer Housing Edinburgh

The Queer Housing Edinburgh Facebook group provides a space for queer and/or trans folks of all identities to find a safe and supportive place to live.

Staff Pride Network

Last but not least, the University has a Staff Pride Network – an inclusive network that serves as a resource for the rich diversity of LGBTQ+ employees across the institution. Although this is focused on the staff LGBTQ+ community, students can also contact them for support.
