Venusian volcanoes may have miniature replicas on Earth
This is a short piece which I wrote for the University of Edinburgh’s Teaching Matters blog in 2019. They were running a series of posts on topic of “research-led teaching”. I’ve always thought of teaching and research as things which go very much hand-in-hand, and in this post I demonstrate how teaching can actually contribute to advances in research as well. The work I talk about here was published in Icarus (you can read the paper here) and received some nice coverage in the wider media, including this article in the excellent New Scientist. This all stemmed from a conversation on our 4th year undergraduate Cyprus fieldtrip…..

Were there any follow-up studies or ongoing research related to Venusian volcanoes?

Apologies, I only just noticed this! Yes, my excellent PhD student Ri Cao has just published a paper on modelling lava viscosities and formation of steep sided domes in Icarus (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0019103525000715). He has also been doing work investigating eruption of crystal rich lavas at Marki, which we are preparing for publication
