This is a short piece which I wrote for the University of Edinburgh’s Teaching Matters blog in 2019. They were running a series of posts on topic of “research-led teaching”. I’ve always thought of teaching and research as things which go very much hand-in-hand, and in this post I demonstrate how teaching can actually contribute to advances in research as well. The work I talk about here was published in Icarus (you can read the paper here) and received some nice coverage in the wider media, including this article in the excellent New Scientist.
