Sharing ABC Learning Design approaches worldwide

UiT campus on a snowy day in Norway.

It’s been a year since Instructional Designer Andrea Watkins Pérez at UiT The Arctic University of Norway reached out to me after she came across my University profile.

Their Learning Design team was facing some challenges with running ABC Learning Design workshops online, and they wondered if I would be up for meeting to talk about what we do. I was happy to oblige! We arranged a Teams meeting to connect and share and discuss our experiences of supporting a wide range of course teams across the different institutions over the years.

A lot was discussed in the two hours, and I shared our bespoke content design and development resources for their team to better support academic colleagues, and to improve their delivery of the workshop and course designs, such as our custom-designed ABC Learning Design template on Miro, which is publicly available on the Miroverse to be used globally.

I came across Lizzy’s contact details through the ABC community, as her university had successfully run some of the ABC workshops online – something our university is currently working towards. We arranged a meeting that included some of our partners from another university, and the experience turned out to be both insightful and inspiring. Lizzy was generous in sharing her experiences, openly discussing the positives, challenges, and lessons learned from running the workshops online. This led to a productive and engaging discussion where we could exchange ideas and reflect on each other’s approaches. By the end of the meeting, we felt more confident, motivated, and better equipped to move forward with developing our own digital workshops. While we haven’t yet finalised a way to implement them, we’re eager to explore opportunities for continued collaboration in the future!

The new Online Course Production Service SharePoint site (which launched a few months ago) also hosts these resources and provides information about the ABC Learning Design workshops we run, to help support our own course teams – ABC Learning Design and Course Development.

It was great to meet other learning designers from different countries and institutions. We definitely bonded through sharing what turned out to be very similar experiences – good and bad! Hopefully this will lead to some exciting collaboration in the future.
