Working with the Found Object, Week 2

Primary Research

Research:

To begin my research on the project, I decided to walk on the beach. On the beach, I found a cluster of seashells along the coastline.

Though the seashells which I had collected had lost their shine & lacquer due to acidification.

I decided that the found object on which I’ll be working on would be Marine garbage whilst showing its harmful effects on seashells

Barker’s work had inspired me to explore Marine debris as my found object.

I was also inspired by New York’s climate clock which tells the amount of time we’ve left to protect ourselves from a major climatic disaster. (source- google)

PORTFOLIO/WORKING WITH THE FOUND OBJECT

Shells surrounded by Marine Debris

I decided to pour black liquid on the oxidized shells which represents the presence of oil in the ocean, to portray damage to the seashells. To make it more detailed I decided to keep the shells on a circular marble plate and use it as a clock. I decided to jumble the time of the clock and change its format and show broken needles to depict the fact that we do not have much time left as we have already destroyed our environment in a considerable amount.

Making and Breaking Narrative. DFC.

Primary Research 1

Research: I started off this project by creating some holes on a piece of cardboard. I noticed that the piece of cardboard looks similar to the walls of British Residency which was destroyed during the rebellion of 1857.

Therefore, I decided that I’ll be using the Bullet Holes on the walls of Residency to make my narrative and explore its various definitions.

Primary Research 2

Exploring the Elements

To explore further on this project, I decided to put the cardboard piece in front of a destroyed wall with cracks in it to depict the element of “destruction”

The cardboard stuck against the wall explores the monument in ruins and emphasizes the current situation of the Residency.

The white cello tapes on the borders of the piece portray the element of “Fragility”

Primary Research 3

Using the art of “Kintsugi” to break my narrative.

Developing ideas and exploring destruction for my narrative.

Primary Research 4

Development:

I decided to pour golden glitter liquid on the holes of the cardboard to fix them and emphasize on the fact that by embracing destruction one can create even a stronger and a more beautiful piece of art.

Primary Research 5

I collected some images of the Residency and decided to apply the technique of “Kintsugi” by applying golden colour through the paint bucket application on adobe photoshop.

Resolved works

The final pieces of work created for this project find its narrative in the modern-day, as locals of the residency area do not find the residency and its history as “destructive, traumatizing” rather they have embraced the beauty of the ruins and accepted the building the way it stands today. Not only the walls have embraced the art of Kintsugi but so have the people as they’ve come in peace with the traumatizing events of the past and have “mended” their chaotic history by embracing it.

Mapping the Soundscape

Mapping the Soundscape- Primary Research 1

Getting started on the project via experimentation and brainstorming ideas.

I had selected 7 audio clips. I tried to mix them in different ways and experiment and feel different frequencies, the audibility of different sounds which I had merged together.

After that, I decided to differentiate between the frequencies and wavelengths of the three most dominant sounds of my compilation of the audio clips I had merged.

Each of the sounds had put me in a different mood, hence I had coloured the wavelengths according to the feeling the particular sound gave me.

  • Red for the sound which made me feel anxious and made me feel unsettled.
  • Dark blue for the sound which made me feel neutral and had not been produced by humans, rather, they were natural.
  • Cyan for the sound which made me feel at peace and gave me a sense of tranquillity.

Research on sound and memories: https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/s2123993_drawn-from-the-city-2020-2021sem1/2020/12/06/mapping-the-soundscape-primary-research-3/

I had created a sound mix from the audio clips shared on DFC sound walk group. The particular sound clip reminded me of the lockdown phase.

Development:

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s outbreak and its consequences, our life goes on and we keep on moving.

Hence, I decided to title my portfolio as Ob-La-Di/Ob-La-Da.

The title is said to be Urhobo for ‘Life goes on’.

In the audio mix which I have created, I heard many different sounds. I heard the sound of traffic, horns, tractors, footsteps, up-beat music etc, which emphasises on the fact that our life goes on. List of different sounds that I heard and how they made me feel:-

Sound Chart x Moods.

I decided to make a short video clip in form of frame animation created on a sketchbook, and I added the name of every different sound I heard on the page of my sketchbook.
