Week 3

Edinburgh Portrait Gallery

This week we visited the Edinburgh Portrait Gallery. We were asked to look at the different light fittings and study how and in which ways they were used.

When lighting is involved in a heritage building, energy conservation is key. This is why the Edinburgh Portrait Gallery was lit using track lighting fittings. The luminaire light fittings were made to look discrete, so in many areas of the building, they matched the surfaces. The images below are an excellent example, as the track lighting on the tops of the columns was brown to match the brown wooden surfaces.
