Character Building Project: Artist Research.

Mark Wallinger

Looking at his work, I really enjoyed the two handed paintings he done that resemble Rorsach blots capturing your attention to decipher them. The ‘id Paintings’ 2015/2016 series of works that influenced me to consider working bigger scale and add a level of playfulness to my hand movements. Reading about his work and the proceeds of making, I found it interesting that he used both hands at the same time to create a mirror image on each side of the work. Each side was still slightly different but the same process occurred at the same time on each side, it was something I wanted to play on in my work by using both hands to create drawings that where maps of where my hands where on the paper. HIs work also had a blind performance aspect that gave these works a sculptural aspect making these pieces feel like they have a 3D presence. The artist uses his body as a central part in the making of his work, leaving traces of his physical engagement.

These works are a reflection of the artists self in a visual manner through the marks made by his body and gestures. I aimed to convey something similar in my exploration of marks and gestures of my hands to create a process that conveys the character of Asher.
