Ordinary Artefacts – Plaster & Negative Space.

To start transforming the object I took an old broken umbrella and poured plaster over it, however because it didn’t open fully it captured the closed wire and fabric creating a more solid shape of the folds that happened when the umbrella is closed. This is the end result:

I started exploring working with plaster to figure out how I want to transform the object, working on casting the negative space along side playing about with weight and bulkiness. I had to work outside so that also affected my process, allowing me to work depending on the weather and still restricting the plans I made for developing the plaster work.

This work focused on capturing the space between the folds of the fabric, all the negative spaces that the plaster could get into.

After this piece dried I took out the plaster from the different folds and photographed it as the left over parts of the umbrella, hinting at the object without having the object there. I aimed to also play about the the wiring of the umbrella throughout exploring the small plaster moulds of the negative space of the umbrella.
