Ordinary Artefacts: Week 1

I started of doing a mind-map trying to decided between different objects and the reasons why I would go for that object. I settled on umbrella being my object, I was inspired from seeing the umbrella used in a different way then its usual function in the protests in Poland against more restrictive laws against aborstion. The umbrella became a massive symbol to all the women that came out to protest and be heard when the law wasn’t on their side. Looking at different ways that I can transform the object I wanted to focus on materials like clay, plaster and maybe even cement.

One thing I knew I wanted to focus on was finding ways to make the object loose it’s function or create a new object using different materials that doesn’t have a function at all. One way or another making the umbrella useless for what it was meant for. I ended up purchasing a big umbrella and playing out with capturing rain water inside rather than using it for protection – then this prompted me to explore the movement of that water inside allowing me to explore twirling the umbrella. These are the initial images of exploring the object.
