Weekly Changes – 28/10/2024

This week sees the first small steps in adding support for Ubuntu Noble, there is also a preview of an option for replacing Apache cosign authentication. Here are the details of all the notable changes…

Kernel

The INF_TEST kernel for Ubuntu Focal and Jammy has been updated to 5.15.0-124.134

DHCPD

On Ubuntu the LCFG dhcpd component has gained support for a new logfacility resource which may be used to specify the syslog facility that should be used when emitting log messages (e.g. local7). This makes it possible to direct all DHCP related log messages into a separate file (e.g. /var/log/dhcpd.log) for easier monitoring.

Dell PowerEdge R360

There is a new header for the Dell PowerEdge R360 model – lcfg/hw/dell_poweredge_r360.h – currently it’s just a clone of the header for the R350 so minor adjustments may be required.

Apache Support for MS Entra ID Authentication (Preview)

The ed/options/apacheconf-entra-id.h header provides a simple configuration for using MS Entra ID authentication which is equivalent to our Cosign service. This is still subject to change as the process for registering these websites with MS Entra ID (Azure AD) is yet to be finalised.

hwmon

The LCFG hwmon component now monitors the health of BOSS-N1 disks.

Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat)

The sharp-eyed will spot that the framework for supporting Ubuntu Noble has now been created, it will still be a while before we have anything ready for testing.

Software

There has been significant churn in the options package lists for Ubuntu Focal and Jammy, there should not be any noticeable differences in what is installed other than with the removal of a few transitional packages that were empty, they existed simply to provide dependencies on newer replacements.

These changes are in preparation for the introduction of support for Noble. The shared soy file – lcfg_options.yaml – now defaults to Jammy and a new platform-specific file has been introduced for Focal – lcfg_ubu2004_options.yaml – which deals with all the necessary tweaks. There is also a new file for Noble – lcfg_ubu2404_options.yaml, the new platform will need a lot of tweaks to deal with the removal of Python 2 and the introduction of GTK4.
