Weekly Changes – 12/06/2023

The new Jammy platform is stabilising nicely, the focus this week is now moving back to Ubuntu server support. Here are the details of the notable changes…

Ubuntu Jammy

Details of recent progress on the Ubuntu Jammy platform are now recorded separately, see the latest report.

Network

For Ubuntu the LCFG_NETWORK_ADD_BRIDGE macro now ensures that bridge interfaces do not have any link-local addresses by default. This usually makes sense for bridges associated with vlan interfaces for virtualisation and is necessary to avoid some problematic IPv6 addresses being automatically added. If you need a link-local address it can be enabled via the link_local resource for the bridge. For example:

!network.link_local_br33 mSET(ipv4)

Note that disabling this setting has some implications for IPv6 support on the bridge associated with the primary interface (e.g. br0) so the default should not be changed for those interfaces.

We have also discovered that it is necessary to explicitly specify the MAC address for the bridge on the primary interface, that ensures the correct IPv6 SLAAC address is selected. For example, if the primary interface is bond0 this is necessary for a bridge named br0:

network.mac_br0 <%network.mac_bond0%>

MariaDB

The MariaDB service will not be automatically started when the package is first installed. This avoids the risk of it causing the initial install process to stall and makes it possible to use the LCFG component to ensure it has a secure configuration before it is activated.

DICE desktop partitioning

On the standard DICE desktop the size of the /tmp partition has been increased to 30G. This should provide sufficient space for users to create and manipulate VM images.
