The IAD run a programme of professional and personal development training and support for research staff. The training and support is grouped into different categories, to support researchers with their career planning and research strategy, and include different workshops run over the academic year. To find out what we run and to book training visit our course list webpage.
In addition to this core programme, we may also run one off events that we feel will compliment our programme and provide a great development opportunity for our research staff. One example of this is a 1-hour online media training session led by The Conversation.
The Conversation is a news analysis and opinion website, with content written by academics working with professional journalists. The University of Edinburgh is a member of The Conversation, and this provides academics with access to several training courses. This online session is one training option they provide and is being organised by the IAD for all research and academic staff at the University who would like to build a media profile and take their research to a global public audience.
The 1-hour online session, running on the 18th March 2025, 11:00am – 12noon, will provide more information on the origins and aims of The Conversation. It will look at why researchers should communicate their research to the public, taking them through The Conversation’s unique, collaborative editorial process, receiving tips on style, tone and structure, and insights into how to pitch and the different approaches and article types.
Benefits of attending include:
- Finding out how to join a community of academic authors taking their expertise outside the institution
- Understanding what makes a good story and the types of articles your expertise could generate
- Meeting one of The Conversation’s editors, learning more about how they commission articles and have the opportunity to ask questions
