On November 24th, 2025, four enthusiastic members of the University of Edinburgh’s Digital Skills Training Team spent a rewarding half-day volunteering at Fresh Start Edinburgh. Fresh Start is a charity devoted to helping people in the city who have experienced homelessness and are now transitioning to their new homes, typically social housing. With its hallmark commitment to community and service, the university team was eager to contribute to this essential endeavor.

 

The Team

The team consisted of Laura Arnautovic, Andrew Kirk, Tracy Steinberg and Andy Todd, all passionate about using their skills and time to give back to the community. While they typically work on advancing digital skills within the university, this opportunity allowed them to step out of their usual roles and engage directly in impactful charity work.

 

The Experience

Welcome and Introduction

The afternoon began with a warm welcome at Fresh Start’s headquarters in EH4. The staff provided an overview of the charity’s mission and the specific activities planned for the afternoon. After a quick tour of the facilities, the team was ready to roll up their sleeves.

 

The Projects

Kitchen Packs and Feminine Products Packs Assembly

The first task was assembling kitchen packs, critical to helping people settle into their new homes with essential household items. These packs included utensils, pots and pans, everything needed for someone starting afresh. Working collaboratively, Andy and Andrew efficiently organized and packed hundreds of these life-enhancing kits. Laura and Tracy concentrated on assembling packs of feminine products.

 

Reflections

Tracy noted, “It was inspiring to see how small contributions can make a big difference. The sense of teamwork was palpable, and it was heart-warming to know we were helping to shape more hopeful futures. I liked that Fresh Starts’ focus was charity given with dignity”

Andy added, “Definitely a good fun day and nice not only to hear about the amazing work they do but also to be able to make a tiny contribution.”

Laura thought it was good fun and Andrew described it as, “A really good and interesting day”.

Impact and Community

Volunteering at Fresh Start allowed the team to see first-hand the critical role such organizations play in Edinburgh. The blend of practical aid and emotional support offered by Fresh Start aligns with the values of the University of Edinburgh, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and service.

As the day concluded, the team left with a profound appreciation for the staff and volunteers who dedicate themselves daily to making a difference.

 

Looking Forward

The Digital Skills Training Team plans to continue engaging with local charities, leveraging this experience to strengthen their community ties. Initiatives like this not only foster a spirit of volunteering but also enrich the university culture, showcasing how collective efforts can drive impactful change.
