A Valentine’s Day post, by Nicola
Love it or loathe it, there’s no escaping Valentine’s Day today! Have you been guilty of checking your phone or refreshing Facebook secretly hoping to see a Valentine’s message? It got me thinking… job hunting is a little bit like Valentine’s Day; the search can be filled with anticipation, passion and sometimes even rejection.
Steve Jobs once said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do”. On that note, today’s Valentine’s Day blog post is all about playing Cupid with your career and what you can do to find a job you’re passionate about.
Meet your match
Are you unsure of jobs suited to your skills and interests? Don’t worry! Career Planner can help you identify these by providing a list of jobs that are “good matches”. A good starting point for further reflection.
Love at first sight
Valentine’s Day cards and CVs are not usually mentioned in the same sentence. However, their messages are similar because they attract the reader’s attention through content which is clear and straightforward. Have a look at our resources to ensure your CV stands out for all the right reasons.
Dazzle them
Treat the job interview like a first date. First impressions count. Think carefully about how you portray yourself; from the clothes you wear to the responses you give. It can be daunting but it’s also your opportunity to ask questions and find out more. Follow our interview top tips and get ready to impress!
Plenty more fish in the sea
Rejection hurts – especially if you have had your heart set on a job – but don’t let it get you down. Stay positive and ask for feedback to help you move on with your job search.
Cast your net wider
You can find a job you love and are passionate about but it often takes time and effort. Did you know that many graduate vacancies (as many as 60%) are open to graduates of any discipline? Keep your options open and create opportunities by making speculative applications.
Take breaks
Take time out to ensure a productive job hunt. Don’t forget the other loves in your life – whether it’s an evening spent hitting the gym or a well-deserved catch up with friends.
Has this blog inspired you to search for a job that you are passionate about? As someone once said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”.
Hope you find “the one”.
