Thanks to Kirsten Roche our Careers Consultant for Internationalisation for this post about the Chinese economy and scholarship opportunities for students – Rebecca
At the end of 2014 the IMF reported that for the first time in more than 140 years the US was no longer the world’s biggest economy with China knocking them off the top spot. China’s economy has been growing at an incredible rate for many years now so it is no surprised that they are the world’s largest. The IMF estimated China’s economy was worth $17.6tn at the end of 2014.
Clearly China is a central player on the world stage – and an economic superpower. But how does this translate to graduate job seekers? Recruiters are likely to increasingly seek graduates with an understanding of China to help them develop their business there.
One way that you could gain this understanding is to study in China. There are new opportunities to do this emerging and two providers offering such opportunities are Schwarzman Scholars and Yenching Academy both based in Beijing. Both of these schemes offer fully funded Master’s level courses which provide an academic qualification and an opportunity to find out more about China. They also offer to cover many of the other costs related to studying abroad making them accessible to all students. These courses aim to develop future CEOs and politicians who have an international perspective and an understanding of China.
