Seven Key Societal Investments for Health Equity: Scotland, rUK, and Canada compared

Seven Key Societal Investments for Health Equity: Scotland, rUK, and Canada compared by John Frank.
Widespread lip service is given to the social determinants of health (SDOH). However, there are few published comparisons of how specific jurisdictions “stack up,” in terms of implementing SDOH-based policies and programmes, and thereby achieving commensurate results, in terms of reducing socio-economic and health inequalities. Based on recent SDOH publications, seven key societal-level investments within and outside the health sector are suggested, across the life-course, for increasing equity by socio-economic position. Evidence is presented, from routinely collected data and published studies, of the relative extent to which these largely upstream investments have recently been pursued, and achieved expected goals, in Scotland, England and Wales, and Canada.
Here is a short version of the 2015 “Seven Key Investments” paper published in Soc Sci Med, with the analysis extended to include Canada, not just Scotland and the rUK.
