YOUNG STAND AWARDS 2015
GUIDANCE NOTES FOR APPLICANTS
The Young STAND (Scots Tackling Alcohol and Drugs) Awards Scheme was set up in 2013 to recognise and reward innovative work across Scotland to prevent alcohol and substance misuse. The scheme is a joint initiative led by Mentor and the Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy. By hosting these awards, STAND aims to:
- support the provision of effective alcohol and substance misuse prevention projects for and by young people in Scotland;
- give public recognition for innovation in alcohol and substance misuse prevention for young people in Scotland;
- share practices in alcohol and substance misuse prevention for young people;
- promote healthy attitudes and behaviours among young people in Scotland.
Winners of the STAND Awards 2015 will receive a cash prize of £1000, and the possibility of training and mentoring to develop and evaluate their project.
Who should apply?
Projects will be selected from two categories, with one winner chosen from each:
- Schools: projects taking place with young people in any school in Scotland.
- Communities: projects taking place with young people in Scotland outside a school setting.
What are we looking for?
- Projects that focus on alcohol and substance misuse prevention with young people across Scotland. This includes a broad range of projects – everything from after-school clubs to community initiatives, and from drama and sports-based projects to mentoring programmes.
- Projects that involve young people in development and/or delivery. We want to see projects where young people have been involved in designing and contributing ideas; where they have contributed to project management or developing materials; or where they carry out project activities, for example through peer support or delivering classes.
- Projects that show evidence of evaluation. Evaluation essentially refers to the process of finding out if your project is making a difference. We are interested in hearing from projects who are trying to do this, for example through feedback, surveys of young people or asking stakeholders such as teachers or police officers whether they think the project has had an impact.
What is expected of the finalists?
Finalists will be asked to create an eight minute video which showcases their project, and includes the theme “Young People are the Key”. On the 8th June 2015, finalists will present their videos to an audience at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. They will be given 2 minutes to introduce their video. After all videos have been presented, the judging panel will decide on a winner from each category.
Would you like to apply?
You can apply by filling in the application form. The closing date for applications is 20th April 2015. We will notify projects of the outcome their application on the 27th April 2015.
If your application is successful, you will have until 3rd June 2015 to submit your video.
Good luck!
