Debate:‘Designers have not yet come to terms with their complicity in the creation of the conditions of environmental crisis or with their environmental responsibility, nor have they yet reformed their practices accordingly.’

This debate’s motion is ‘Designers have not yet come to terms with their complicity in the creation of the conditions of environmental crisis or with their environmental responsibility, nor have they yet reformed their practices accordingly.’ and I was in the team Against.

Since I have no experience in debate, I was a little confused when preparing for this debate. However, I can’t agree with the accusations against the designers either. We all know that the operation of a society depends on the rules set by the government, and the products produced by an enterprise are also restricted by the leadership and budget of the enterprise. In non-ideal real life, the designer, as a member of the company’s employees, does not lead the product or economic operation process that is doing damage to the environment.Combined with the second debate, this is why we need the government to enforce the implementation of some regulations. After all, designers are not the ones who hold the power. But we can also see from the company products of major industry giants that products that are conducive to sustainable development are constantly being designed. So instead of blaming designers, it‘s better to promote everyone’s awareness of environmental protection.
